Who We Are

1st Blofield & Brundall is a Royal Navy Recognised Sea Scout group based in Norfolk. We hold Royal Navy Recognition number 68 — one of a select number of Sea Scout groups across the UK to have earned this distinction.

We run programmes for young people aged 6 to 18 across four sections: Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Explorers.

We are part of the Eastern Norwich District, within the wider Scouts organisation.

Our History

We were founded in 1913, just five years after Robert Baden-Powell established the Scout Movement. After closing during the Second World War, the group was reformed in 1952 and has been active ever since.

Our Locations

Headquarters — Yarmouth Road, Blofield, Norfolk

Weekly section meetings take place here.

Waterbase — Brundall, Norfolk

Our Brundall site is a RYA Training Centre and is where we run our water-based activities — sailing, canoeing, paddleboarding, and powerboating. We are also working towards British Canoeing recognition.

Royal Navy Recognition

Royal Navy Recognition is a formal affiliation scheme administered by the Ministry of Defence. We hold Recognition number 68 — awarded to Sea Scout groups that demonstrate excellence in seamanship, water safety, and maritime programme quality. Only a select number of groups across the UK hold this status, and we are proud to be among them.

What it means in practice:

  • We are inspected by a Royal Navy officer every 18–24 months, assessed on seamanship standards, appearance, programme quality, and boating proficiency
  • We are entitled to fly the defaced Red Ensign and the Admiralty Pennant — a visible mark of our affiliation
  • Our members wear the Royal Navy Recognition Badge as part of their uniform
  • We have access to Royal Navy facilities, equipment grants, and leader training opportunities through the Admiralty Fund
  • We are eligible to take part in exclusive Royal Navy–sponsored events, camps, and competitions

Maintaining this recognition requires us to uphold consistently high standards — and that ambition runs through everything we do, from our waterbase programme to the way our sections are run.
